Social Networks a quick introduction

In this blog I share a quick introduction to some of the major social networks along with some interesting stats and facts. An ideal starting point if you are thinking about getting started with social recruiting.

LinkedIn is the world’s largest professional social network, enabling members to build a professional identity online.

Users can connect and engage with like-minded professionals (or prospect candidates and clients) in 200 countries. 61% of LinkedIn’s members are between 30-64 years, students and graduates account for the highest growing demographic, currently 39 million users and counting.

  • LinkedIn has more than 380 million members
  • Members are active in over 200 countries
  • Everyone 2 seconds a new user signs up to LinkedIn
  • LinkedIn is currently available in over 24 languages

Launched in 2004 Facebook originally limited membership to Harvard University students. After expanding membership to various Colleges and Universities Facebook membership opened to everyone in 2006.

Today Facebook has more than a billion active users. 84% of Facebook users are aged between 18-29 making this, the highest demographic across the network. Graduates are currently the biggest users of Facebook with 75% logging in daily.

 

Interesting Facts and Statistics:

  • More than 1 billion active daily users
  • On Monday the 24th of August 2015 1 billion users logged in and used Facebook. In other words 1 in 7 people on Earth used Facebook.
  • Available in over 70 languages
  • 31 billion mobile monthly active users

Twitter is an online social networking service, which allows members to send short 140 character messages called tweets. Registered users can read and post tweets but unregistered users can only read them.
18-29 year olds account for the largest Twitter user group (35%). Following the trend set by Facebook and LinkedIn graduates represent the a fast growing segment of users.

  • 316 million monthly active users
  • 500 million tweets sent per day
  • Over 35 languages supported
  • Introduced the # (hashtag)

 

YouTube | www.youtube.com

Launched in May 2005 and acquired by Google in November 2006 YouTube is the video based social network that allows users to upload, view, and share video content.

YouTube has more than 1 billion users with a fairly even gender spilt. 85% of online adults (excluding China) consider themselves regular YouTube visitors.

 

Interesting Facts and Statistics:

  • 300 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute
  • More than a million advertisers are using Google ad platforms; the majority of these advertisers are small businesses
  • Half of YouTube views are on mobile devices
